This week is all about money, money, money and how much I have spent on Mounjaro so far 💰
After being on Mounjaro, a GLP-1 medication for weight loss for more than a year, I reflect on the cost of this wonder jab that has dramatically changed my weight and outlook.
Let’s dive in…
My latest Mounjaro pen should have cost £164.50, but the pharmacy had an offer on so I paid £131 plus postage for one month’s supply.
Over the last 12 months I have spent £2,188 on this medication and, although that is quite a big number, to me every single penny has been worth it.
I committed to myself at the start of this experience that I would make sure I’d always have the cash to be able to pay for the medication. As with many things to do with finances, there is balance to be found. So here’s how I balance the cost of Mounjaro against other areas of life.
If anyone from Vinted is reading this, I’d happily be sponsored by you 😄
Vs amount spent on snacks
The amount of money I was spending haphazardly on snacks was awful. I dread to think how much it was and I can’t bring myself to work it out because it will cause me too much shame.
Some months it would easily be near to the amount I am spending now on Mounjaro. This is snacks as well, not the regular food shop or proper meals etc. I can say for certain that the amount I spend now on snacks is significantly less, hurrah!
Vs amount spent on clothes
At my heaviest, I was living in the same selection of clothes day-in-day-out. Combine that with two post-baby identity crises, and there have been some quite strange clothing choices.
That adds up to a fair amount of money being spent on clothes I don’t love, in sizes that made me glum.
Before I started on Mounjaro I had a session with a personal stylist which was great, and I loved the clothes she helped me select. I wore most of those clothes until they looked mad because they were too big. I ended up selling a lot of them which in turn funded the new clothes I needed in my new sizes.
During my weight loss, I have bought nearly all my new clothes on Vinted. I have also purchased good quality Uniqlo tops and jumpers that I really like and have worn lots. Now that my weight has plateaued I should get decent wear out of them when the weather gets colder again. When you like the clothes, and they are good quality, it’s much easier to feel good about yourself.
Vs everyday spending
I knew from the outset that paying for Mounjaro each month was going to require me to not go overboard on spending in other areas. Cutting back in other areas is absolutely worth it for me to be able to keep using this medication.
Our biggest family expense is monthly nursery fees and until the 30 hours funded childcare kicks in for us, we have to keep half an eye on what we spend (for context one month of Mounjaro costs the same as 2 days at nursery).
Skincare is my hobby, it’s the thing I enjoy experimenting with and my morning and evening routines are my daily self-care ritual. I have reduced what I spend in order to free-up cash for Mounjaro, and I still get the same pleasure from the whole routine of picking new products and trying them out.

Kids clothes is another area where cutting back what you spend is actually quite easy, thanks to Vinted. My kids are aged 2 and 6, and they don’t tend to have growth spurts at the moment, so their clothes last a lot longer. The majority of their clothes come from Vinted - it’s a no-brainer for me when you can get new or nearly new clothes in great condition for a fraction of the shop price. Again - freeing up cash for Mounjaro.
So that’s how I make it work at the moment, and I’m sure as things change and life keeps life-ing that I’ll have to readjust in order to make sure I can keep taking this wonder drug. The talk of the medication being available on the NHS at just the price of a perscription is wonderful, but as I’d be at the very end of the waiting list (which is estimated to take 12 years to work through), I am happy to pay for Mounjaro for as long as I need to.
