Hi Fran! I came to your page from the ‘NZ ozempic and Shrek’ Substack. You’re the first person I’ve seen write about this being a long-term medication and I’m really glad to see it framed that way. As someone in healthcare (working somewhat in the ED scene), I’m worried about GLP-1s being a bandaid for a bigger issue - and thus a short stint on ozempic/mounjaro/wegovy only sees the issue come back once the drug is stopped. I stress that coming on and off these drugs risks weight cycling which can more detrimental to health (on top of the dreaded ‘food noise’ returning). I’m just glad to see GLP-1s framed in this way, and it’s definitely helped me come to terms with it a bit more.

Thanks Kate for your comment and for taking the time to read my experience. I agree that a short stint is not a good idea, and ultimately not good for wider thinking about GLP-1 medication. My understanding is that many people who use the medication as a treatment for the chronic condition of obesity expect to be on it in some form, for the rest of their lives.

I don’t think the message that it’s a long term medication is amplified enough! Maybe this is a cross-country difference or just my experience. Anecdotally, I know several individuals using it as a temporary fix and that’s what worries me! But thanks again for sharing your experiences. I can definitely see this medication is important and life changing for many people (and that’s so cool!)
